Telephone tuition has a lot of advantages:
- You get more value out of a telephone tutorial. Psychologists consider that people listen more attentively on the phone than face to face - tutors as well as students!
- Telephone tuition is easier to schedule than face-to-face. You need only schedule the tutorial time (e.g. half-an-hour), rather than the tutorial time plus travelling time (e.g. two hours).
- Telephone tutorials are easier to adapt. For example, you can shorten a half-hour tutorial to 15 minutes. This would be absurd if you were travelling to it, but not if you're taking it by phone.
- You don't have to be in a particular place for telephone tuition (you just need access to a phone). If you're on a business trip or on holiday, you can still have your tutorial. A Hong Kong student of mine recently continued her tutorials unchanged while she holidayed in Vancouver!
- The cost of the telephone call makes little difference to the price of the tutorial - especially when compared with travel costs. You try getting to Vancouver and back for 5 UK pounds!
